Free Signal Path Download – Verbal Yes
1 September 2010, 11:58 pm
Before their new album hit the download shelves earlier today, we had a chance to partake in some back-and-forth emailing with the drummer of the electronic band Signal Path, Damon Metzner. They’re giving our Media Contender readers one of their tunes to check out and juuuust in case you then want the entire album (of [...]...
Ray Cash vs. Joker & Rustie (Kraddy Next Level Mash Up)
1 September 2010, 10:19 pm
Electronic music seems to be growing incredibly fast, so many artists are pushing boundaries and expanding on the ol’ genre limitations that quite frankly had become boring. Over the last few years the new sound of the electronic music landscape has gained a cult following on the West Coast. Los Angeles has become a breeding [...]...
Kastle – Better Off Alone ( Udachi Remix )
30 August 2010, 2:27 pm
When you talk about bass music in general, you usually reference UK artists first. However, the good ol’ US of A is coming strong with its own list of top tier artists turning out a string of solid tunes. Kastle is from the Burgh. No not Williamsburgh NYC, Pittsburgh Pennsylvania to be exact. He has [...]...

HARD TORONTO by thesupermaniak
18 August 2010, 10:49 am
The HARD Summer Tour featuring Crystal Castles, Rusko, Sinden, Destructo & more, finally hit Toronto last Saturday. Everything was on point inside The Guvernment. Proper sound, cool visuals, a sick lighting show and a crowd that was there for the music. No matter what I say, you won’t know how crazy it was unless [...]...

England to Scotland via train
12 August 2008, 5:04 pm
The weather here has been typical for a summer in England but has been driving me nuts. Sunny outside one minute raining harder than you’ve ever seen sideways the next then sunny 30 minutes after that. Because of this I wasn’t able to iron out a beach trip to Cornwall. I was able to work [...]...

Seeking bodyguard named Betty
20 June 2010, 10:33 pm
I am a Paul Simon fan in my mid thirties. As my name is Al, for the past 20 years I've been searching for a friend named Betty with whom I could sing the Paul Simon song "You Can Call Me Al." Imagine how much fun we could have singing along with the lyrics and pointing at each other when our names are mentioned! We could sing it together on road trips with the windows down, at home with our stereos cracked loud, we can smile at each other knowingly when it's played in gas stations and grocery st...
BEAT IT WITH A REAL JO-BRO - m4m

You: -Must have a busy schedule. This must be legit. Holding down a 3.8 in the College of Engineering while working two jobs, running a business, publishing original research=busy. Sleeping in until 2 in the afternoon, smoking with your friends, watching re-runs of Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia=not busy. That way, we can always blame everything on timing. My Porn Watching Pig Boyfriend
5 March 2010, 10:18 am
So you like watching these porn-sluts get pounded and creamed? OK, I get it, I kind of like some of that too. It's rather entertaining, if not slightly disturbing/fascinating to WATCH. But now you're getting all fucked up with me, and although I keep taking it from you, you're probably on the way out, and I'm trying to think of ways to get you back. Because, at the end of the day, the "new" hardcore is rather degrading, and there are too many limits being pushed. Here are a few of mine that k...

Penis Measuring
2 March 2010, 6:01 pm
A friend of mine and I have been having a long-standing argument about whose penis is larger. We've tried having our girlfriends confirm to the other the exact size, but neither one of us buy it. I don't want to see his penis and he doesn't want to see mine. I don't want my girlfriend looking at his penis and he doesn't was his looking at mine. So... The Burrito Blog

25 February 2010, 8:23 am
El Pelon is making a comeback! Again. Recall that this hot spot was struck by fire, twice. From Grub Street Boston: Owner Jim Hoben confirms, telling us that the second coming of El Pelon is set to open in mid-March at 2197 Commonwealth. "Right now, we have about three weeks of construction left and then some final permitting. Everything will be exactly the same: same menu, same prices, same vendors, same employees, we even managed to save some of the decor from the wreckage." The official El ...

7 February 2009, 8:15 am
T-Rex Taqueria had just opened. Maybe they didn't have their act together. My burrito took a while to make and somehow the hot sauce was left out. The wrap was a little messy and ingredient distribution was poor. And they only had black beans. While waiting I did enjoy the decor: an eclectic mixture of fossil logos and vintage photos of professional wrestlers. If I were in the area I'd go back, maybe even regularly. But T-Rex is no destination....
Welcome To T-Rex Taqueria
4 February 2009, 8:00 am
Burrito speed eating rivals John Liu and Sheb both brought T-Rex Taqueria to my attention mere days after its opening. Located on Cypress Street near the Brookline Hills T stop and Brookline High School, T-Rex is mighty close to competition at Boca Grande, Baja Betty's, and Anna's Taqueria. Expect nothing less from the self proclaimed king of taquerias. View Larger Map My bet is they're going after the open campus foot traffic of the high school students and municipal workers at the nearb...
Airport Burrito, Airport Prices
27 January 2009, 7:36 am
Don't get me wrong, I was thrilled to be able to order a burrito at Logan airport's Terminal C. That counts for a lot, but that's where the thrill ends. I went with the steak classic burrito from Currito, add guacamole. As a long time adversary of the cilantro lime rice, I wasn't expecting much. Expectation correct. The Currito burrito was strictly average in every way but one. $8.33 for a burrito. Wow. I didn't have my scale with me, but the FDR must have been a record low. See also: ...
Welcome To Currito
24 January 2009, 5:05 pm
Currito is a national franchise chain operating in nine states: Arizona, California, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, North Carolina, New Jersey, Ohio, and Washington. The origins of Currito were difficult to track down, even for a sneaky Internet hombre (me). Founding: Headquartered in Ohio, Currito's first year of operation was difficult to glean. Their website was written in Latin as recently as July of 2007. No, Currito does not predate English; websites are often mocked up with Latin b...

Mr. Fink has a pretty serious workload in grad school. Fortunately, he lives close enough to Olecito to walk over for a tortilla time out. A couple years ago, Mr. Fink showed me The (Big) Enchilada. Now it was my turn. For $5.50 we each picked up an Olecito burrito that comes with guacamole and a side of chips and salsa. Take a break from Inman legend Punjabi Dhaba and check out Olecito. The little two night stand at the Frost Amphitheatre in October 1982 has always been a...

GRATEFUL DEADWednesday, December 15th, 1971Hill Auditorium – Ann Arbor, MISoundboard RecordingWhen taking a broad stroke look at 1971 and 1972 one generally sees some stark differences. Jumping from a late April 71 show to one from the same time of the year in 1972 reveals a band that seems to have evolved far more than twelve months might allow.A pivotal shift occurred in October 1971 when Keith Godchaux was added to the lineup, reshaping the band's rhythm section and inspiring play at all l...

On the very next night they were simply playing the next stop on the Spring 77 tour in Buffalo, New York. For them, the events of the previous night were very likely to have passed relatively unnoticed. It was just what happened yesterday. A good show, no ...

Penny Reel on Stoke Newington Reggae Record shops in the 1970s
3 September 2010, 5:02 am
A while ago these images appeared on the North Sixteen Twitter: I recognised them from a 1970s reggae documentary “Aquarius” as they are announced as being Stoke Newington (London N16), which is where I live: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jkfFQNRs4cI (Footage starts at 4:50 but it’s well worth viewing in its entirety) There was some interest about the exact location [...]...

Cybore: Box Set Go
30 August 2010, 5:18 am
Cybore / Box Set Go. Matt owns a lot more boxsets than me: These Trojan sets, compiled by Steve Barrow, were the most accessible way to get into Black Ark stuff in the late eighties. They foreshadowed Barrow’s later work with the Blood & Fire label – incorporating great selection, sound quality and design. And [...]...

2005 Ugandan Dancehall Video of the week #11
23 August 2010, 11:59 pm
Bebe Cool – Awete http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LkCJlOaDVNo The minimal keyboard melody in this is a real winner, I think. The crossword graphics are a nice touch, but some of the effects maybe bleach it all out too much. Respect also to the reappearance of Bell Lager and a particular sacred herb. Also the dialetic of surrounding yourself [...]...
Blood Rites of the Bourgeoisie
22 August 2010, 10:39 am
Stewart Home – Blood Rites of the Bourgeoisie (Semina, 2010) Home’s latest novel is an installment in a series of books of experimental fiction. More on other episodes in the series anon, I hope. “Blood Rites” has a number of themes – identity blurring, spam, the machinations of the art world in London. It confuses [...]...
2005 Ugandan Dancehall Video of the week #10
21 August 2010, 2:34 am
unknown by unknown http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2uqjWt_v_Xk I have no info on this quartet, but still present their miming and synchronised dancing for your delectation. This is what I always imagined Uganda’s cross-dressing secret police force, the “Black Mamba Urban Hit Squad” would actually be like, rather than the actuality of brandishing guns....
2005 Ugandan Dancehall Video of the week #9
11 August 2010, 12:19 pm
Ragga Dee – Ndigida http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LGbRKEoFEtk More awesome catchiness with some randomly-shaped dancers shaking their bits in synchronised style around a pool. This has got the lot – breakdancing, hot gals shaking their asses, even some inexplicable cross-dressing madness. The only downside is that it cuts a bit short, sorry about that – if anyone has [...]...

5 August 2010, 2:53 pm
Female pressure from the crew named Blu3: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zzl4skW-yE0 This reminds me of Misteeq and the like (I still rate Alisha Dixon as an MC actually, shame she went down the sleb route instead of honing her mic skillz…) So I guess this is arguably more r&b than dancehall, but what the hell. Nice bit of [...]...

Hollertronix 10: The Partysquad – ‘Murderer (Diplo & JAYOU Remix)’ + more JAYOU Remixes
17 December 2009, 11:51 am
R.I.P. Hollertronix series, that club staple borne in Philly by Diplo and Low B that, in its lifetime, has seen the pair rise from small time basement collaborators and underground party hustlers to major label players and arena rockers. It helped introduced the world to Bmore and Balie Funk music and let DJs know it [...]...
Audio Bullys: ‘Kiss The Sky’
17 December 2009, 10:02 am
London’s Audio Bullys never fail! This tune is massive in the playlist. I love the Bullys because they always have A-game production and good, catchy, songwriting with signature delivery. They can do it all! The new heat is ‘Kiss The Sky’, a big room electro house stomper—and def. a mad reapeater since the Audio Bullys [...]...
Ian Brown: ‘Just Like You (The Prodigy Remix) plus hella old UNKLE colabos
17 December 2009, 8:28 am
Credit: Perou Now, one of ‘Toof’s favorite things is seeing two seemingly different favorite things commingling & fraternizing into one super-favorite thing. I’m speaking about favorite thing Ian Brown, vocalist of seminal English band The Stone Roses (‘87-’95) and favorite thing, The Prodigy, gods of industrial techno (with broadening horizons). The two got together on Ian [...]...

Lil Wayne: ‘Drop The World (feat. Eminem)’ & ‘Get A Life’ from ‘Rebirth’ album. Remixes from Flying Lotus & Stenchman
17 December 2009, 12:48 am
New Orleans’ MC champion Lil Wayne has an infectious one with Detroit underground-com-pop-raper Eminem on ‘Drop The World’. Eminem’s frequent pop-parody raps have made him more pop-than-pop like a US Weekly magazine—but still, the man’s got talent and now-and-then pulls off something really special that reminds me why I used to excuse myself on going [...]...
Lupe Fiasco: Empire Strikes Back: A Love Story
15 December 2009, 10:12 pm
Lupe Fiasco, skater boy champion of Chicago hip hop, released a 22 minute long mixtape recently titled ‘Enemy of the State: A Love Story’. On it, Lupe pulls some ol’ Ice Cube shit jackin’-for-beats move. But the new twist is that the contemporary MC, Lupe sources beats from the likes of Radiohead, instead of sticking [...]...
My Cat Drinks Tap Water
6 December 2009, 12:16 am
My Cat Drinks Tap Water are a noisy lot of young men from Queensland, Australia. They make hardcore-ish electronic-ish lo-fi music and, obviously, have an acute sense of subtle observational humor (my cat usually washes down his cheezburger with tap water too). My Cat Drinks Tap Water, or MCDTW—for usability purposes—have captured a sound similar to [...]...
Kite In The Air: ‘Magic Marker’
22 November 2009, 9:25 pm
I’d like to put a little more kindling on a group that I’d like to see catch a fire: Kite In The Air. Kite In The Air is collaboration between [...]...

Rubix brand disco house is hot. This Amsterdam, Noord-Holland based DJ/Producer is catching major buzz, and from a little chit-chat, seems to be a nice bro to boot. Aphex Twin vs. Chevy One – Dublicker
20 November 2009, 1:48 am
We’re down for this white-label. There’s charm in the no-name, no-label no-BS tracks; they’re perfectly content to exist in obscurity: no flashiness, no waving of banners. It’s just a track to find and appreciate on it’s own merit. Well here’s one, which I, admittedly, gave a listen to because it’s obviously a dubstep remix (because [...]...

A taste of the rage at the demise of his birth giver. Crystalex Zelenkastles
11 April 2010, 11:56 am
Keeping things interesting in the Crystal Castles hype realm as the big comeback is getting closer with every day approaching towards the new single release Doe Deer - we're expecting a massacre on the 17th. It wasn't long ago when Crystal Castles pulled a houdini with their alleged remix album, but lately a number of previously unheard 'Official' remixes started to pop up everywhere - I only assume that these are cuts from that alleged remix album's vault. The Remix/Dub I'm presenting t...

Numbers Game
17 March 2010, 5:58 pm
Indie kids don't dance to generic techno they trance to dance punk and in most cases it happens behind closed doors at the shrines of themselves. If that really was the case then you'll probably want to move in with Numbers Game, a one man band of DIY religion with the skills of long time NME headlining acts and the authenticity Pitchfork strictly demands. From beat to guitar the technique is well studied and the emotion-projection is effortlessly tangible with a basic and functional structur...

Relief in the Temp Sector
3 September 2010, 6:38 am
A month ago, the Labor Department's payroll data offered a worrying sign for the economy: temp employment had dropped in July for the first time in 10 months, signaling potential trouble ahead for the labor market given the temp sector's traditional role as a leading indicator for overall jobs. With today's payroll data, that brief decline in temps looks like little more than a blip. ...

I love Florence and The Machine. A new video for “Cosmic Love” was just release and, while sadly lacking in an HQ version, its still worth the watch. If for some reason you’ve never heard her before, please do yourself a favor and get the whole album, turn it up loud and rock the fuck out [...]...
Quick Hit: Logistics – Kaleidoscope (Jeuce Rework)
4 May 2010, 12:25 pm
Here’s a new type of post I’m going to be doing: dubbed “Quick Hit” (for now) Its pretty much just anything I dig and want to share, but for which I don’t have the time to do a proper old-school Hacks post. Chopped and screwed remix of an old school Logistics’ track called “Kaleidoscope”; totally solid [...]...

The Swear: Graveyard Songs Immediate confession: For the longest time, in my wallet, I carried around a guitar pick I had thrown at me the first time I ever saw Atlanta rock band The Swear live. It was a gale-force surprise of a show, them being tapped for a last-minute opening slot when my friend and I [...]...
